“The Impossible Dream” was composed by Mitch Leigh, with lyrics by Joe Darion, for the 1965 Broadway musical “Man of Lamancha”, whose story is loosely based on the 17th century Spanish novel “Don Quixote” by Miguel de Cervantes.  It’s inspirational lyrics made it one of the most popular anthems of the ‘60s, and gave it a life in popular culture outside of the context of the musical.  It had a resurgence in popularity in the ‘70’s as a result of the film adaptation of the musical starring Peter O’Toole and James Coco.   It has since become one of the most covered songs in American pop music, with recordings by such disparate artists as Andy Williams, Frank Sinatra, Jim Nabors, Glen Campbell, Elvis Presley, Susan Boyle, Jennifer Hudson, Julio Iglesias, and many others.
