“If I Only Had A Brain” was written by Harold Arlen (music) and Yip Harburg (lyrics) in 1939 for the classic Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer feature film “The Wizard of Oz”, featuring Ray Bolger (Scarecrow), Jack Haley (Tin Man), and Bert Lahr (Cowardly Lion).  Separate verses were written for these 3 characters using the same melody line, which detailed the separate reasons for their quest to see the Wizard.  Of the three, the Scarecrow’s quest for a brain is probably the one best known and remembered.
