“Daydream Believer” was written by singer-songwriter and Kingston Trio member John Stewart in 1967. He offered it to his friend Chip Douglas, who at the time was producing a television sit-com about a fictional rock/pop band called “The Monkees”. The four actors who starred in the series (Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Mickey Dolenz) had started to actually perform and record some of the music associated with the show, and had produced a number of singles that had made it onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Their version of “Daydream Believer”, with Davy Jones doing lead vocals, reached #1 in the U.S. for over 4 weeks.
