November 2024 - "All Creatures of Our God and King"
This month’s tab is an arrangement of the hymn “All Creatures of Our God and King”. The original text was written circa 1225 by the Italian friar Francis of Assisi as part of his Canticle of the Sun poem. Nearly 700 years later, English pastor and hymnist William Draper translated the words and adapted them into a hymn intended to be sung by a children’s choir. Shortly after that, composer and arranger Ralph Vaughan Williams came across it while working as the editor for “The English Hymnal”. He adapted the well-known German hymn tune LASST UNS ERFREUEN (1623) and paired it with Draper’s lyrics. It quickly spread to hymnals of various denominations around the world, and today it is often sung as a doxology, especially around Thanksgiving.
Here is a link to a video of an instrumental piano arrangement of this hymn.
Enjoy, and wishing you all a Blessed Thanksgiving!
In music and friendship,
